The Flagship That Sailed for 20 Years

In the plumbing and gas world, the Honeywell zone valve was the undisputed king for decades. It was the “flagship” of the airing cupboard. I still regularly service systems where a Honeywell valve has been clicking away for 20 years without a single hitch. They were built like tanks; as an engineer, you knew once you fitted one, it was set for the long haul.

Five Months and Finished: The Quality Crisis

Lately, though, there’s a big question mark hanging over the trade: what has happened to the quality? It isn’t just my experience—talk to almost any plumber today and they’ll tell you the same story. I took this photo on a call-out for a customer in Balham SW12, whose heating had already packed up. This valve was only five months old when it failed.

When a “premium” part fails that quickly, it’s a waste of my private time and a massive headache for my customers. I refuse to put my name behind a product that I don’t trust to last through its first winter. My reputation is built on doing the job right once, not going back twice because a big-name brand isn’t up to the task.

Why We’ve Switched to ESI

Because of these ongoing issues, we made a firm decision over a year ago to stop installing these valves and move to ESI. Here is why:

  • The 5-Year Warranty: ESI backs their product for five years. When a manufacturer gives that kind of guarantee, you know they believe in the build.
  • The “Smart Swap” Compatibility: This is a huge win for efficiency. The ESI actuator head is completely interchangeable with old Honeywell valve bodies. If your old valve head fails, we can often pop an ESI head on with the push of a button—no draining the system, no mess, and a much faster fix.
  • Proven Reliability: Since switching, our callback rate on zone valves has dropped to practically zero.

I want to be fair—this isn’t about being “anti-Honeywell.” They still make many fantastic products. One of my personal favorites to install is the Honeywell T3R Thermostat—it’s a brilliant, reliable bit of kit. There are many other great products in their range, but when it comes to these specific zone valves, the quality just hasn’t kept up.

Our Promise to You

My job as a gas engineer is to vet every part that goes into your home. If a product starts failing, it doesn’t stay in our vans. We’ve moved to ESI because they do what the old legends used to do: they just work.
